I find this quote fucking offensive. Thanks for telling me what I feel, Margaret. I fear being thought of as a rapist, or worse a pedophile (I work with children), much more than being laughed at. I'm also much more likely to be the victim of male violence than a woman and only half as like to be a victim of domestic violence. I've also been raped twice, once by a man and once by a woman. I consider them *rapists* not a product of their gender.

This in no way is to diminish the very real problem of male on female violence, but this classifying all men as potential perpetrators is not going to help in any way, it just pits the genders against each other.

Call me when this conversation gets on to just how fucked up this attitude towards men is. What other demographic could you take the actions of a tiny, tiny minority and make them representative of the entire cohort and it be OK to think like that?

I'm a school teacher. If a kid falls over and hurts themselves and starts crying I get a woman lest someone think my nurturing qualities are actually the actions of a dirty sex fiend.

Just like having an orifice makes you a potential rape victim. Saying you are at risk of testicular cancer doesn't mean you're going to get it. You may never get testicular cancer, but we can still discuss how this affect males collectively, yes?

Cheese with your whine? Men cannot even handle the slightest criticism. Call me when males stop raping and killing. I don't like being part of that group either, but I'm not interested in blaming the victim or whining that my penis is being unfairly judged because someone noticed which gender is doing the overwhelming majority of the fucked up shit being done.

The issue is whether or not that potential is significant enough to be worth thinking about.

Are the chances of any particular man being a rapist so remote that it's silly to worry about?

The statistics suggest not.

If so many people are unable to discern whether or not #yesallwomen describes behavior that they have personally engaged in versus behavior that they need to call out among other men, then I think a lot of people either need to take some serious time off for self reflection or therapy.

I don't get why it is so hard for them. I have never personally catcalled a woman on the street, but that does not mean I am absolved of responsibility to help make it socially unacceptable for ANY man to do that. And I certainly don't deserve accolades for simply behaving in a manner that is to be expected as a minimum level of respect.
