What If MoveOn.org Existed 65 Years Ago?

WW2/Iraq comparisons of course have all manner of caveats attached, but I still thought this was rather amusing:

Also, anyone should be failed in history for "America was founded on Christianity!"

[identity profile] glenniebun.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
That would be a manner of caveat, yes? This has all of those, it would seem.

I agree that we are in an entirely different era. I'm as left-wing progressive as this board gets. That doesn't change the fact that moveon.org's attack on Petraus plays right into the hands of the neocons and brings the debate back to bickering partisan politics. Petraus is a military general, not a politician, and he's done nothing but serve his country.

Crap like this only gives Republicans a chance to hang in office by giving them ammo to say that we are anti-american.

I agree 100%

Yeah, cause Iraq and WWII are exactly the same thing. Do you realize how naive you sound?

There's a degree of difficulty in finding any cartoons (or any other medium of expressing ideas) that have a broadly pro position on present US policy in Iraq. [Sometime I aliterate just for the hell of it.] When you're scraping the barrel....it's difficult not to use even slightly skewed material: especially if it's that or nothing.

[identity profile] firstashore.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe that says something about the present US policy in Iraq...

To be specific...

[identity profile] lunza.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, we declared war on Japan, and Germany in turn declared war on us. Ergo, Germany was the enemy -- no question about it. We've never known an actual declared war, so we have no idea -- we just think the prez sends in troops when he feels like it.

Re: To be specific...

[identity profile] firstashore.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Germany and the US were already at war in all but name before the Pearl Harbour attack. German U-Boats were sinking US ships in the Atlantic, and US escorts were attacking German U-Boats when they found them.

Hitler's declaration was just a formality.

[identity profile] edgar-suit.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
That's funny.

[identity profile] edgar-suit.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I seem to be the only one who can find it funny without agreeing with it.

Some of the comments in that RedState thread are hilarious, especially the one with the helpful tidbit that "Only the fact that Germany invaded the Soviet Union caused [liberals] to support US involvement in the European Front in WWII."

[identity profile] firstashore.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear. Never mind the fact that it was in fact the far RIGHT of US politics that pushed strongest for Isolationism and to stay out of the war in Europe - largely because many were Nazi sympathisers.

A point that could be taken here, is that we should try a bit harder to examine the facts from more than one angle. There's merit in the OP even if it isn't 'true' is is useful.

Personally I'd rather see the US clean up the mess that it started and get some proper leadership in there... which unfortunately we have to wait until 2008 for.

I admire your optimism, even if I do not share it. Both about the clean-up and the leadership.

Ike said we better watch out for the military industrial complex. Boy was he right. Fuck the right wing.

[identity profile] firstashore.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And we didn't. It's scary how Ike's prediction has come to pass, exactly as he warned.

Just a way for the Left to dismiss what he had to say without confronting what he had to say. Standard political move.

[identity profile] debergerac.livejournal.com 2007-09-15 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
ww2 became a good war in the lefties' rear view mirror thanks to fdr, but does anyone really believe today's left would have supported war with nazi germany?
