Actually, it would be Pat Buchanan and other America-Firsters on the far right wing who'd be making that argument. In the historical context, the lefties were strong supporters of the war, because the Fascists were staunchly anti-Communist. It was leftists like George Orwell who were traveling to spain of their own accord to fight against the Fascists there.
