Nobody had to tell me that, all I had to do to come to realize that is hear US conservative politicians open their mouth and give out their beliefs.

All they care about is tax cuts for the rich, aka selfish, they don't give a damn about the environment, unless it affects them personally, self centred, and they admire people like Trump for being cowboys, egotistical. And don't get me started on how they think men can get to decide what women need in regards to healthcare.

Look, I'm not saying the democrats are saints, far from it, they are far too right wing for my tastes. But they're able to look beyond themselves and consider the needs of others. And because of this, fewer of them will get caught at doing crap that only profits themselves. They're also smart enough, not to say racist or misogynist crap in an every day interview, the way that American conservatives do on a regular basis. Why, because democrats can look beyond their own bubble and realize how what they say sounds to people that aren't of the same race and/or gender as themselves.

Somone like Sanders still makes mistakes, because he's still an old white man, and Hillary might be privileged as hell. But both of them at least realize that they're not just talking to white people. And that if they say something involving race issues, or immigration, that their words affect the people they're talking about. Something that a great deal of republican politicians seem incapable of. (and keep in mind that liberal leaning news media would jump on any of their own politicians saying anything bad, because liberals as a whole tend to be far more critical of their own, than conservatives are of theirs.

The problem is that the current crop of right wing conservative politicians in the US are extreme rightwing fanatics. Many of whom want to turn the US into a Christian Taliban. They are anti-science, anti-education, anti anything that benefits people other than themselves, and because of that they don't even consider the idea that they might get caught.

I'm replying to this a little late, but hopefully not too late. This comment gives me so much life! It reminded me of all the reasons why I'm proud to be a progressive and a Democrat. I agree with every word!

With all due respect, those words are absolutely not without basis. You're saying they are does not change anything. I'm not going to argue this point, because it would amount to trying to prove a negative, which is an an exercise in futility. If you really feel that all progressive values have no "basis," that's fine, but you can't expect us to take your word for it.

Sorry, this reply has me lost. I don't understand what it has to do with what I said.

Seems you know, or rather you think you know, about american politicians from far Belgium.

Stated without so much as even a trace of irony. Classic!

I don't know how long you have been in the USA, but your posts here demonstrate you have learned very little about our culture or politics. Still, your cluelessness doesn't stop you from coming here and lecturing on those topics to those of us who were born and raised here. I find it amusing that you project your own faults on our Belgian friend.

"And that is why the rest of the world sucks. "

Yup! Damn those other nations with their lower rates of:

Illiteracy
Childhood poverty
Death from lack of healthcare

Yup! Those three things make America GREAT!

Once the republican party either slips out of the stranglrhold of the teaparty. Or a new party stands up and takes its place.

And don't forget infant mortality. We're pretty crappy in that category, too!

"The rest of the world sucks" is such an incredibly sweeping statement, isn't it? It's a ridiculous one, too, because (like most such sweeping generalizations) there's no way it could possibly be true. The world is such a huge and diverse place that no one could even know enough about all of it to KNOW that ALL of it sucks.

The truth is, EVERY place in the world probably sucks in some respects, and most places also have some good aspects. The US is no exception, and the idea that it isn't is toxic and destructive in so many different ways. Too bad certain people here in this com will never recognize that.

Have you ever been to Canada? Australia? New Zealand? They're all pretty nice places. They also have single payer health care.

The only other country I've visited is Canada, and it was a very nice place. I also know enough about the world to know that there are some countries that do suck (in terms of my personal values), a lot of others that don't, and a great many that fall in between. As I said before, most places have some good aspects AND some bad aspects, including the US.

As far as where I'd prefer to live, I'm okay living here, at least or the time being, although the part of IL I live in is a bit red for my tastes. However, I'd definitely consider moving to either Canada or the UK, if not for things like family considerations. Some of Canada's immigration laws would be problematic for me, but since my father was a UK citizen when I was born, I might be able to get a toe in the door a little more easily there, according to the research I've done.

(Before you start going off on what's wrong with Canada and/or the UK, let me just point out that you don't live in either of them, so you don't REALLY know what it's like to live in either place, any more than I do.)

I still stand by my previous assertion that "the rest of the world sucks" is way too broad of a generalization to have any validity. It's meaningless hyperbole.

I wouldn't argue with the idea that there are countries that sound like pretty crappy places to live, but the WHOLE "rest of the world" outside the US "sucks"? Give me a break! Unless you've been to every single corner of the globe, there's NO WAY you could know what the entire "rest of the world" is like, much less whether ALL of it "sucks."
