the old testament has plenty of kill the unbelievers, kill the other tribes etc. and according to the new testament, jesus said he was not there to change the old rules, just to make sure that people follow them
just cause the new testament has a bunch of love your neighbour stuff and stuff that is nice doesn't negate all the horrible stuff in it as well. if it wasn't part of that religion, it wouldn't be included
Again sadly, you are wrong. Yes, the Old Testament full of God's commandments to kill the sinful tribes of Canaan - who worshiped evil demonic deities, that advocated among other things throwing new born babies into the fiery furnaces of Moloch.
These people worshiped horrible 'gods' whose violent, sinful and evil activities were an abomination to God. He warned the Israelites that unless they were stamped out, the new country of Israel would never have peace. but the Israelites didn't listen and toward the end of that country's existence, they even worshiped these demonic entities instead of God. So He blotted Israel out of history as an autonomous nation.
***************** THOUSANDS of years later, Jesus is born and He preaches that He IS there to make a new Covenant and a NEW Testament with God for all mankind to supersede everything in the Old Testament (and this was in fact predicted in the Old Testament over 900 times.) Jesus Christ does negate all the horrible stuff in the Bible that happened earlier- becuse He DIED for you and for all those horrible things that had happened. And Ever WILL happen- if you bleive in Him and try to live your life as a true Christian.
That's the 'love your neighbour stuff' you refereed to.
"Jesus Christ does negate all the horrible stuff in the Bible that happened earlier- becuse He DIED for you and for all those horrible things that had happened."
Do you expect this to sound at all convincing to anyone not within the Christian faith?
I'm afraid that it's one of those things that sounds like ludicrous nonsense to people without pre-existing bias to take it seriously. Jesus dying does nothing to change how morally dubious Old Testament ethics and theology was.
So, God as Father told people to kill anyone not of them, to kill bratty children, to kill not-virgins on their wedding night, to kill everyone in the town if they tolerate one single non-believer... but then God as Son came and went to his death (that He knew about, omniscience..) just so he could take back all the killing that He previously said?
More, The Quran, which was divinely delivered via the Angel Gabriel, specifically says that the God of the Muslims is the God of the Jews and Christians ("people of the book").
"Dispute not with the People of the Book save in the fairer manner, except for those of them that do wrong; and say, 'We believe in what has been sent down to us, and what has been sent down to you; our God and your God is One, and to Him we have surrendered.'" -Verse 29:46
...So we have God saying "Slaughter everyone for me!" then God saying "Nope. I got to die now for all that previous killing", then God saying "Uh... actually... kill all the non-believers..." If we throw the Mormons into it (also a divinely-inspired holy book of Abrahamic faith) then we get even more messy.
And if you ever ask why I put the tree right there, or why I let the serpent tempt Eve, well, just stop asking questions. I WORK IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS OK????!
Yay another cherry picker believer of the bible! Let me guess, you are against homosexuals and same sex marriages right? Right? Cause Jesus hates gays? And everything against homosexuality came from the New Testiment?
