Having that tape just made his attitudes too palpable to ignore, I guess,
though if you listen to the tape, it's not exactly the old-fashion racism. He
even tells his gal that she can sleep with Magic Johnson if she wants,
but just don't post pics on Instagram that embarrass him with his friends.

What I like about Jabbar's article is the way he brings out the iffy
character of the tape. The girl was playing him along so blatantly.
It's a squicky affair all the way around.

I have several friends who use umbrellas in the sun. They're from either English, Irish or Polish stock and have exceptionally pale skin. Combine this with the lack of UV protecting ozone layer down here and they will have significant sunburn after 5-10 minutes in direct sunlight, this is with SPF50+ on every exposed area (and few exposed areas, most things are covered up with clothes). In these circumstances, the portable shelter of a parasol isn't just suitable, but necessary.

I could see that being different in places that aren't like living on the face of the sun.

In her case: because the sun causes irreparable damage to the skin.

In other people's cases (like mine): a little too much exposure causes sunburns. Yay photosensitivity. Though I've never worn a welding helmet.

I love the sun, but even with an olive complexion more than 20 minutes of unprotected exposure will do significant damage here. Hell, my african friends wear sunscreen in Oz.
