And I thought umbrellas in the sun were obnoxious. I've seen the visors too and had to fight the temptation to ask the person if they were a cyborg from the future.
I have several friends who use umbrellas in the sun. They're from either English, Irish or Polish stock and have exceptionally pale skin. Combine this with the lack of UV protecting ozone layer down here and they will have significant sunburn after 5-10 minutes in direct sunlight, this is with SPF50+ on every exposed area (and few exposed areas, most things are covered up with clothes). In these circumstances, the portable shelter of a parasol isn't just suitable, but necessary.
I could see that being different in places that aren't like living on the face of the sun.
