Again, why not go for the guy who is financially independent? It's a plus and unfortunately people, regardless of gender, associate income with work ethic.
I feel like you missed my previous point. This was not a side-by-side comparison people made between two profiles. This was two different groups--presumably who did not know there was another group looking at the identical profile (minus the income difference)
I don't have the data on hand, but I imagine that the 'low-income' individual was not dirt-poor.
Yet, you seem to have almost gotten the point. Higher income associates with *enter favorable trait here*
No, I understand your point. The difference in ratings is due to cognitive dissonance, which stems from the characteristics people associate with wealth.
Higher income associates with *enter favorable trait here*
But this is an association that goes beyond gender. People associate higher paid individuals with various favorable traits, regardless of gender. (Another reason why the gender income gap has been around for so long, since women are often conveniently paid less than men for equal work, men often see women as less qualified than their male counterparts, and this trend loops back in on itself.)
I was not suggesting it was gendered one way or another. Believe me, I have had plenty of arguments with other men about "why the hell do you care if your gf/wife earns more than you?" Because I understand men *do* care about that sort of stupidity. And to be fair to both genders, women do care about how much they're potential partners make.
Ain't men nor women that are exemplars of virtue. (this is of course statistical, individual men or women may be virtuous exemplars!)
