Re. the second: I forget who said this, but it's very true. Respecting someone's right to believe something does not in any way imply respecting the thing they believe in. Conversely, disrespecting the thing they believe in does not in any way infringe on their right to believe.

Of course, you can respect someone's right to believe something whilst treating them with disdain and contempt because they believe it. It's the latter bit that tends to get complaints for 'being disrespectful to religious people).

(as a side note, I don't actually think the latter is a justified attitude, just saying that it's not incompatible with respecting their right to belief)

The problem comes when people conflate being disrespectful to religious people with some kind of violation of their rights. This is why Christians in America, Muslims in the UK, etc. have such ridiculous persecution complexes.

There's nothing wrong with objecting to unfair criticism and prejudice even when it's not a violation of your rights.

As long as there's no attempt to ban people being disrespectful then that's okay. I personally more than happy to call out certain opinions and attitudes as being bigoted and unfair towards religious attitudes (especially in regards to religions marginalised in my area such as Islam)

The Catholics need to address this already. I feel the first step is to stop lumping themselves under this Christian banner. That smacks of Protestantism to me. Besides, I think its a political construct. I thought I heard some where that the Pope tells or has told to stay out of politics.

And this whole work ethic and having wealth meaning one is favored by god thing? That is totally some messed up Protestant thinking with their predeterministism and all...

Personally, I'd be considered a heathen by Catholic standards and forever denied the presence of El/Elohim/YHVH for the unpardonable sin. So what the Attis Dionysus Osiris Krishna Mithra Zoroaster Jesus followers do to one another I don't care about. It's just when it bleeds over to the rest of us that it's an issue. And I do know that it was a lot easier getting things like civil rights, women's rights and making a the nation a lot more progressive back when all those weird sects and cults were not so buddy buddy.

Agreed. We need to out the Protestants as heretics and make them stop calling themselves Christians.
