Toronto is in a big stink over bike lanes right now. Funniest part is that our mayor was so insistent on removing one of them (despite all the studies + annoyed residents of the area) that he agreed to move it over one major street. At huge cost. While complaining about unnecessary spending.
Sherbourne already had lanes. Nothing is being put in place to compensate for the loss of lanes on Jarvis. Sherbourne's lanes are in pretty bad shape, so they may have promised to repave them, but they were already there.
I very much disagree with the line of reasoning that says that car lanes and pedestrian lanes should be on every street, but bike lanes not.
From what I read, they're either extending or completely redoing them -- there's a cost there that was not being planned until it was used to appease the councillors fighting for the Jarvis bike lane.
I don't know if bike lanes should be on every street, but every major street (or at least every other major street?) I would very much be behind. That'd be enough to make me start biking again.
Around where I used to live they blocked off heaps of streets so that the only cars on them were local traffic, the rest were all bikes. It was awesome.
If Jesus had meant for disabled people in wheelchairs to get up and down pavements he'd have made ramps. Ergo, Jesus hates those wheelchair-bound disabled people he hasn't magically cured through his intervention.
For a monthly look (with archives going back a good ways) of horrendous attempts at shrugging off the obligation of bike lanes, see Cycle Facility of the Month (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pete.meg/wcc/facility-of-the-month/).
"In order to provide a respite from the blistering heat of a Grimsby summer, North East Lincolnshire Council have planted an avenue of trees along this cycle-path to shade cyclists from the sun."
I love the wheelchair one. I spent the first month of college at SUNY Buffalo in a wheelchair because of a car accident. You learn to rely on the kindness of strangers. One nice girl actually saw me struggling and took me from Ellicot to the bookstore which must've been a 1/4- 1/2 mile walk.
The university got sued later for not providing enough access for people with disabilities, and I think one thing that was specifically mentioned was wheelchair ramps/doors and the like.
I was wheelchair bound for the first half of year 11 at high school, the school was completely unequipped for wheelchairs so I got passed without attending any classes or going to exams :D
How hard is it to look in your wing mirror before opening your door? When it's happened to me I stop and smash off their mirror saying that if I was a car they would have lost their entire door and possibly a limb, so they should feel lucky they got off lightly.
Exactly. And not only do I check in the sideview, I open my door a couple inches before I'm fully ready to get out so that people watching for doors see that it's about to open in the near future.
