How hard is it to look in your wing mirror before opening your door? When it's happened to me I stop and smash off their mirror saying that if I was a car they would have lost their entire door and possibly a limb, so they should feel lucky they got off lightly.

Exactly. And not only do I check in the sideview, I open my door a couple inches before I'm fully ready to get out so that people watching for doors see that it's about to open in the near future.
