I still can't figure out what I would do with all this gold and silver in a currency collapse.

I mean, here I am growing my grain, baking my bread, and this dude comes up and says "I'll give you this silver for that bread!" And I look at him like he's crazy and says "What the fuck will I do with that silver? I need a cow. Or some chickens. Or a new plow. I can't eat the damn silver."

[And then my ax-crazy friend comes out, shoots him in the head, and takes his shit, proclaiming "THERE'S MEAT FOR DINNER PRAISE JESUS!" but that's beside the point.]

And even then once we get around to metals being a worthwhile currency again, people aren't going to want to keep all that heavy gold and silver around the house. So we'll pay other people to keep most of our money in one secure, insured place. And eventually we'll get tired of carry around even that small amount we keep with us, and the businesses we pay to keep our metals will write us little notes that they assure will be worth X ounces of metal. And then we'll need more notes than we have metals, and we'll just get rid of the metals entirely.

If there is a currency collapse, we can pretty much expect civilization as it currently exists to die right then and there and for things to go mostly into post-apocalyptic mode. All paper (and digital) money becoming automatically worthless and usable for nothing more than pretty toilet paper doesn't mean that everyone will step in offering doubloons in lieu of a paycheck.

What you will see is a breakdown of social order as we revert back to basic necessities: How do I get food, clothing, and shelter so I may survive? Since paper money is worthless and only a few Libertarian Dudes have gold coins, the answer is astoundingly simple: Time to arm up and get shit the old-fashioned way. The currency of an economic collapse, as history has shown, is more often a working firearm and corresponding ammo.
