I feel like we've done this one already too, but definitely something simpler.

All these 'liberal media bias' memes are laughable... as only actual, real-life liberal will tell you. With very few exceptions, do you see people in the media advocating for a single-payer health-care system? The temporary nationalization of big, too-big-to-fail banks? Massive crackdowns on CEO pay and other Wall Street regulations? Serious regulatory action on climate change? Prosecutions of Bush administration officials for involvement in torture or the misleading case for war in Iraq? A pullout from Afghanistan? I don't.

Does the media cut Obama a lot of slack? Sure. But, up until the last couple of years, they cut Bush a lot of slack too. Don't believe me? Watch this documentary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EP3gYH9TYxU). The media worships power... corporate power, political power (regardless of which party is in power). That is their bias.

So, yes the media has its internal biases to overcome. But it's not a liberal one.

So, in other words, the media is liberal, but not far left.

Got it.

It's funny that you only say that when I utter the absolute truth.

Absolute truth? You completely ignored the substance of my comment?

Oh, and for the others reading this... the first time I said badlydrawnjeff was a shithead was when he conceded to my point (http://community.livejournal.com/politicartoons/1581041.html?thread=33699569#t33699569) that the overwhelming majority of citizens in countries with government (or government-assisted) health-care programs support those systems... but simply replied, condescendingly, "What they want is not necessarily what's best for them."

This is modern conservatism in a nutshell, folks.

I'll let my above comment, and his dismissal(s), speak for itself.

Your comment had no real substance. You misunderstand the nature of the political left and the ideological leanings of this country.

I don't care that you consider me a condescending shithead. Sometimes the truth just needs to be said.

I don't agree with everything my company's heads believe in. Most reporters are left wing Democrats, it's absolutely reasonable to see that they act as they believe.

remember when i posted that article about a year ago featuring former conservative republican strategists talking about how calling the media "left-wing" is just part of their strategy, like criticizing the referee instead of one's opponent so as to sow doubt among independents even when republicans are caught doing awful shit, and you said nothing?

good times

I don't agree with everything my company's heads believe in either, but as a representative of my company and more specifically my department, if I do something against company policy or disobey my supervisor I'll be standing on a streetcorner with a cardboard sign reading WILL INSULT MORON LIBERTARIANS FOR FOOD so quickly my head will spin.

It depends who you're working for. If your organization tells you to say Obama's doing a frickin' kickass job and by tomorrow morning rainbows will be shooting out of everyone's asses, and you don't do that, you lose your job; similarly if your organization tells you to say Obama eats live babies and is forming a Gestapo to round up white people and ship them to internment camps, and you don't do THAT, you also lose your job. If your organization doesn't make you report what they want reported, you don't live on this planet.

From: [identity profile] badlydrawnjeff.livejournal.com
Right. So clearly, the corporate-ness of the media doesn't influence the reporting, considering that they're quite left of the general population.

From: [identity profile] xforge.livejournal.com
???? How do you get that? Marketing is marketing but you can't sell shit to people and expect them to think it's caviar. Media is just like any other 21st-century product: bland and lifeless, and pretty much exactly what most people want it to be. "The Media" isn't slanted left or right because "The Media" is only giving people what they want to hear. If it isn't what people want to hear, they're going to change the channel, and then that media outlet is going to go broke.

"The general population" elected Barack Obama, Jeffy, because they thought he was going to do something progressive. He hasn't, but that's immaterial. "The general population" isn't nearly as conservative as you think it is.

Center-right compared to Europe.

How pray tell do you imagine a "liberal media" surviving in a center-right nation? Don't you think all the center-right people would get sick of hearing liberal glurge schlepped out to them by the "liberal media?" When in reality the "liberal media" is one of the biggest moneymaking organizations in the US? Well, not counting newspapers mind you.

It's a center-right nation and a pretty much center-right media. And no possible way that could be any different.

I don't know if you noticed, but it's not surviving so well. The one right wing telelvision media source is the one that's been doing well in the ratings overall.

no one's going to argue with you that the MSM is mostly a craven, small minded group of individuals.

But they're not really giving Obama nearly as much help as you seem to wish they were.
