Honestly, I don't see the point. Not one person I know that started smoking as a kid picked it up because they were some super cool flavor. They just got whatever was cheapest/they could steal from other people.
Considering you can still buy snus over the internet(and the NO SNUS excuse is out because Marlboro AND Camel both have snus flavors, although the camel shit is unbearable after real snus) and the same with Djarum blacks I don't think that was the meaning. I also think there is a provision in the bill that says no existing tobacco product will be banned, so nothing already on the market is going to be affected(hopefully). The thing that pissed me off most about it was that it could remove shisha from the market, potentially. And that shit just ain't kosher.
The thing that pisses me off is the PACT act which is attempting to make tobacco an un-mailable product(which they say UPS is already doing, which is bullshit because I still get the UPS shipping option when I order snus) because unpaid tobacco taxes SUPPOSEDLY fund terrorism. The Comstock law comes to mind. Dammit, the post office is suffering enough as it is, this is one thing they can still make some cash off of(because UPS is godawful expensive) and you're trying to take it away. Not to mention all of the Indian reservations that make a living off of growing and selling tobacco products. That is the bill that pisses me off. I can't believe that these aren't getting any press beyond snus communities.
You can't impose laws on other country's ability to sell products to private consumers overseas. The law was against the marketing and sale of tobacco from businesses in the US. Private consumers are still allowed to buy products of other countries because there is not a ban on use. We can't import, say, heroin because possession is illegal. However, we can import absinthe with wormwood(or could before the ban was lifted a few years back, which makes the law null now, and you can sell it) because it wasn't illegal to possess. Another example, snus cannot be sold in many countries of the EU, but a provision for Sweden joining was that they could still buy and sell snus(cultural reasons) and people outside of Sweden are still allowed to use it. Example, certain Finnish cruise lines focus simply on going to Sweden to buy snus and bring it back with them.
This law is especially stupid because it allows for the sale of menthols, which, oddly enough, all the underage smokers I knew smoked. Newports and Salems are cheap, and very easy to obtain. In fact, there were often excursions to a local Getty to get cartons because they were especially cheap there. When I heard about the law, only after it was signed into law, I was extremely angry. I can understand banning the "low tar" labels, but not flavors. I only hope this will be overturned eventually. A lot of the things we consume are hazardous to our health, but there is no movement to ban McDonald's or Burger King from marketing to kids. Or to make high sugar cereals have to print huge "This Cereal can rot your teeth, and make you fat" labels. Or on colas such as Mountain Dew, Surge, or Jolt "Caffeine may stunt your child's growth". It's extremely hypocritical.
