We know there were teleprompters at that speech of course. Reagan used them all the time. He had great delivery without them as well. He was trained. But I think this picture, even though it's on a bunch of sources, has always looked weird to me. Now keep in mind I am not denying that they are there. You can see them at the end of the full video of the Miller center version of the speech. But the lighting on this picture has always freaked me out.
I'm still not sure what the teleprompter thing is meant to actually accomplish, though. "The President reads words!"? "The President didn't memorize his speech!"? Who knows. I am sure that it is a big deal for some reason or another that I just don't understand.
Like almost all of these crazy complaints coming from the right these days, I think it starts in some ill informed joke that just goes on and on and on with little connection to anything of substance. I mean, this is a great example where someone just wanted to post some jokes and another person kneejerk says "no teleprompter" with no actual connection to if it is truth or even matters or anything, right?
Anyway, what is it about them that never allows them to say "oh ya, I guess reading notes is rather common when giving an important speech"?
i think 90% of the teleprompter pics, especially of older presidents, are shopped. i doubt they even had teleprompters that look coincidentally exactly like the ones obama uses when reagan made that speech.
this one seems to be authentic, though. i'm not sure a website dedicated to archiving speeches from all Presidents (http://www.historyplace.com/speeches/reagan-parliament.htm) would really lie about it.
It's not exactly the most advanced technology, either. It's two bits of glass that reflect what monitors at the base show.
But... it's a BAD joke. Bush DID butcher the english language. Obama doesn't rely on a teleprompter any more than other presidents have. Were I to make something up about someone, then have everyone suddenly act like it was the best joke in the world, you'd think we were all deraged... not funny.
I guess I am used to butchery of language by politicians since my childhood and go not by speeches, but by message itself as well as by actual action taken.
That's a legitimate point. I didn't much care that he didn't talk like a great orator, but I did find Bush's condescending, "Don'tcha get it?" attitude to be repellent.
