Today is the day Glenn Beck is rallying assorted teabaggers, Larouchies, and miscellaneous malcontents in Washington DC to protest against the President and the imaginary horrors he will soon unleash upon us. To mark this special day, I'll post (again) this Colbert bit from earlier in the year on the Beck 9/12 project-

PS- Before the comments get going, I'll just say that people like Glenn Beck don't make me angry. They get off on that. It's performance art, like a male Ann Coulter. If he believes more than half of what he says, I'd be very shocked. It's theatre, people.

I really, really hope they actually do something with this. Because it's totally not written in my planner.

That I want to spread lies and bullshit about its government and talk about overthrowing its legitimately elected president.

It may be theatre, but its red meat, too. I doubt 1/5th of his regular viewing audience has any ironic detachment from it.

Presumably he's making a metric assload of money off his schtick, so that makes it all right in this country. As long as no conservatives and no corporations are hurt by it, that is. Look at what happened to John Edwards. A little girl had her guts sucked out by a faulty pool drain and Edwards sued the manufacturer. Never mind this little girl had her guts sucked out, Edwards was-- gasp gasp gaspity gasp!-- harming a corporation. Socialist, communist, anti-American, ad nauseam, ad infinitum.

I absolutely agree with you. What worries me is many of the Democrat equivalents actually BELIEVE the crazy shit they shovel, like "Bush planned 9/11".

Both are reprehensible...if we could only load all of them on a boat and sink it in the middle of the Atlantic....

I agree with you, but the liberal-learning 9/11 Truthers don't have multiple national platforms with giant audiences. Beck is on an entire television network devoted to it.

As the other guy said, the 9/11 Truthers are crazy but they don't have a national platform. You don't see any prominent liberal media types advancing the claim that Bush knew about 9/11. Even Van Jones didn't have a pulpit to scream his beliefs from and his beliefs were not as extreme as many of the Truthers, he simply wanted an investigation into whether the government did everything it could, not whether they knew exactly what would happen and let it go. Also, there are plenty of Truthers on the right-wing as well as the left-wing.

Are you suggesting that O'Reilly and Beck don't actually believe what they say?

i think a fair character assessment of o'reilly is that he believes most of it, but he'll say something he knows is a lie if it keeps him or his ideology from looking bad

like once a year he'll actually be all aggressive towards a conservative guest out of nowhere, as though it enhances his credibility and he can keep pretending to be "independent"

beck is trickier, since he's an adult who converted to mormonism after he got drunk and fell down some stairs (BUT MIRACULOUSLY SURVIVED!!!!!), so naturally he decided god had spared his life and had a divine purpose for him. everything about his writing and personality suggest he's about as dumb as he claims ("i'm a workin' stiff college is evil blar blar blar"), and i'm pretty sure he buys into the "common sense" logic that pervades the propaganda wing of the right (which usually takes the form of "IF GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL THEN WHY IS IT COLD?!?!?!?!? *smugface*)

"It's theatre, people."

I say the same thing about Rush Limbaugh, but so many idiots take these people seriously. I was also unaware that Chuck Norris is an "author."

But even though it's "theatre," I cannot stand Anne Coulter. Listening to Limbaugh, Beck or Coulter makes my teeth grind. It's like watching a comedian that isn't funny, but also racist and homophobic.

But thanks for posting that Colbert video. I don't watch TV so I miss stuff like that, (as well as the 99% that's total crap.)

The satisfying thing is that these people are really upset because there's a black man in the Oval Office. I have a friend in Florida who witnessed prayer circles, complete with gnashing of teeth and crying, on her college campus the day after the election.

That vision gives me comfort.

rush limbaugh genuinely has problems.

i know a guy who has listened to him for ages, solely for the purpose of entertainment and character assessment, and based on his findings, rush is really really depressed and his ego is incredibly fragile.

like he gained a shitload of weight when al franken released that book a while back ("rush limbaugh is a big fat idiot") and he even refused to discuss it on his show. painkiller addiction is also a common manifestation of severe medical depression.

I know Rush Limbaugh is mostly shtick, and that he's actually an intelligent guy who can be quite funny. But there are many stupid people who believe what he and Glenn Beck say - and these guys take no responsibility for their inflammatory statements when some idiot goes too far and does some real damage.

I believe that what we say matters.

you'll get no argument from me, i'm just sick of people going "well the left is just as bad herp derp derp" as though keith fucking olbermann is calling for the blood of tyrants on a daily basis.

limbaugh and the fox squad have much more influence and do far more damage than maddow's snide remarks or olbermann's delusions of edward r. murrow

I don't watch tv, but I've seen video clips on the web that gives me the impression you pretty much nailed it.
