I was only hoping that all the noisy nut jobs in the news were proving the point:

A wise man stays silent and appears a fool; a fool opens his mouth and removes all doubt.

Then I sat at the entrance of Walmart people watching.  79%:  fat, lazy, stupid.  I am so
embarrassed to live here at times.  We should be so grateful for the slight majority of us that
at least rejected the beauty queen of lazy & not-too-bright..  Intellectuals must unite to save us!
Stupidity=fear=violence.   Brains over brawn!

The problem with intellectuals - they have zero experience but think they are smarter and more knowledgeable then anyone else around them.

Your point is? I think it's been well established that being well-educated doesn't mean you are smart.

The ability to apply the knowledge you've obtained, or should have been able to obtain.

Well, no. There are plenty of smart liberals, for instance.

The problem with morons - they have no clue but think they are more knowledgeabke than anyone else around them.

Being an "intellectual" is in no way mutually exclusive with having experience (Intellectuals don't magically appear out of thin air, they have to live life too). Nor is expereince of much value without sufficient intellect to analyse and use it.

intellectual: developed or chiefly guided by the intellect rather than by emotion or experience

that's Webster's dictionary for you

Rofl, that doesn't refute what I said. I know this is hard for you but try and use that grey matter ... oh wait, that'd might make you an Intellectual¸ oh noes. Firstly that is just the definition of the adjective, the nuance of meaning is somewhat different when used as the label for a group. If we take the definition as accurate enough, it just says that they are objective or do you think intellectuals don't have emotion in addition to this supposed lack of experience.

This from wiki
"Intellectual" can be used to mean, broadly, one of three classifications of human beings:

1. An individual who is deeply involved in abstract erudite ideas and theories.
2. An individual whose profession solely involves the dissemination and/or production of ideas, as opposed to producing products (e.g. a steel worker) or services (e.g. an electrician). For example, lawyers, management consultants, educators, politicians, and scientists.[1]
3. An individual of notable expertise in culture and the arts, expertise which allows them some cultural authority, which they then use to speak in public on other matters.

Generally when used it's the second definition meant when people start throwing the term around, though "People who use their brains" is closer to exactly what people who say it are thinking/meaning

Don't worry, no one will ever mistake you for an intellectual.

Just one of the many reasons I won't shop at Wal-Mart.

But you're observation is all too correct. The majority of Americans have never traveled outside this country, watch too much TV, (especially too much Fox News/CNN/etc.,) are stupid and ignorant, and have closed minds.

Is it any wonder this country is so fucked-up?

I agree there are a few good shows on TV, (about 3% to 5% of what's on.) But you have to put up with extreme right-wing assholes (like Glenn Beck) pretending to be journalists, and commercials that literally scream at you to buy their crappy product.

I quit watching TV a few years ago. Instead of sitting through all that negativity and noise, I just wait for those few good shows to come out on DVD. I have a NetFlix account and we download anything else.

I'm partial to British TV programs myself.

The ignorance, arrogance, and smug sense of superiority in this post and in the bulk of these comments gives me a hard-on.

lord knows that the right-wing doesn't want people to be SMART. That would enable them to see through the lies.

Yo, I'm a pointy-headed intellectual, getting a PhD from a big, fancy school and everything, because I want to use my education and Arabic skills to, you know, save the world.

I'm also overweight and pretty unattractive. I bet if you saw me at a Megalomart, or walking down the street, I bet you'd assume I was one of those lazy, ignorant slobs who are clearly ruining the country.

In other words, please, for the intertubes' sake, tone down the smugness. A lot. Or if you're going to be smug, try to avoid the extremely annoying habit of linking physical appearance to intellectual and moral deficiency in your rhetoric. It's shallow, and it doesn't win any points. At least not from the smart, non-lazy people you suppose are your peers.

No love,

Hear, Hear! How can you tell how intelligent a person is by looking at them as seems to be the claim made by many on this thread. Being overweight does not automatically mean you are lazy, it might just mean that you have a high skill high tech job that puts you sedentary in front of a computer for 10 hours a day like me.

Edited for spelling errors, it is to early for me (7 am local).
