When people talk about going back to the "good old days" I just don't think that they think it through...

I like the cartoon :)

i freaking love toles. when i discovered him via slate, i read his entire backlog and then searched him on lj, and found this place.

every time i see his distinctive people shapes i get all giddy. and the bit in the corner never fails to make it even better.

There's another cartoonist who does a corner bit too, though I like this guy a good bit! He's one of my faves, and his name escapes me right now.

I was wondering whether someone else caught that. :)

So, the cartoon says it is being restored to its constitutional amendment...lets look at that:

SECTION 1. Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution or the constitution of any State, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.

Where is the property section? I missed that one.

Actually, the cartoon states that it is restoring marriage to it's traditional definition: I think you may have misread it.
The traditional definition of marriage, as given in the Bible, differs from the constitutional definition, in which Church and state remain separate.

At the risk of stealing your thunder: I am right and you are wrong. Irritating, isn't it?

Can you quote the constitutional definition where it says that church and state must remain separate in marriage? Please back up your claim with proof.

Do you support the amendment?

What I support and don't support has nothing to do with this debate. I just stated that the traditional amendment says nothing about property. And it doesn't.

That may be true, but I was just curious what your own personal views are.

My personal view is that marriage is part of a private club. In this case a religion. Therefor the club can discriminate.

Now, civil unions are the government and must be fair to all. Therefor they must allow and consenting adult (18 year or older) to enter within a civil union with any single or group of consenting adults.

Thanks for your answer! I respectfully disagree on the private club part because the gov't bestows rights and responsibilities in absence of a legal contract on it.

If the gov't stopped being in the marriage business (ie, stopped viewing marriage as a legal contract) and only issued civil unions, I'd be down with that.

That way I could still get married in a church that respected my relationship while also getting all the legal rights the government could confer with the civil union.

Agreed. The government should get out of marriage. Since it is there thought it should be for any single or group of consenting adults. This includes gays, straights, incest, and polygamy. No life style should be condemned while others are said to be ok, as long as it is with consenting adults.

The big question I have to all people who want to get married but the church says its a sin, why are you still part of that church? You clearly do not believe in everything it teaches. Form your own church and get married in that.
