Federal funding should not be used for scientific research, so this bill was appropriately vetoed. As for Iraq, he really doesn't have a leg to stand on.
Given that federal funding IS used for scientific research, the bill should not be vetoed. It's fallacious to think that we'll ever get to the nice utopian ideal of completely privately funded research by FIRST cutting funding to some programs based on ideology, and then saying, "Oh, we'll get around to cutting funding from the rest later...."
I think it's more wishful thinking than fallacious, but the point remains the same. That the government already spends hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars on things it shouldn't do is no reason to continue to grow this number.
I would prefer this bill to have been vetoed because of its unconstitutionality rather than the ideological position of the President, but the end result is the right result.
What is NASA? Smithsonian? National Science Foundation? Any public university that conducts research?
Surveys done by CNN, Gallupp, and USA Today show a majority of the American public supports stem cell research and would back federal funding for it. Not only that, but David Winston (who officially conducts polls for the Republican majority in the Senate) said that, based on his research, only 25% of Republican voters wanted no more stem cell funding.
Just because these agencies and institutions exist doesn't mean that federal funding is appropriate. The Constitution is clear about which limited powers the Congress may exercise.
