Unfortunately, that is the hardliner's view.

I had really hoped that the centrists in Hamas would gain political control and work towards a two-state solution.

See the two-state solution is what the rejected when it was mandated from the UN at first. So (hypothetically) why should they agree to it now?

I agree that it seems like the only possible solution now, unless either side just gets wiped out.

well, it did belong to the Palestinians for 2000 years until some European Jews decided to take over.

Belong is a loose word- it was owned by various empires and principalities for most of that 2000 years; the last group were the Brits.

I can certainly see that the people who lived there didn't 'own' the territroy, don't natives tend to have a stronger claim than colonialists? After all, the people who lived there had been there longer than the Maori and New Zealand recognises them, even though there was no Maori country of New Zelaand before the colonialists.

I'm sure in most places that are ex colonies the situation would be largely the same.

Belong is a loose word: who rightly owns land? The person living on it? The government of the moment? The person who holds the deed to it?

/shrug.

If there's enough space for everyone, there is no need for war, IMO.

Could be mistaken, but I think the Arabs have only held it for one millenium, not two. Wasn't it Roman/Byzantine before that?

well, if i remember, they did origninate in that area. then they were enslaved by the Egyptians, freed by Moses, and then came back to the area of their "birth", Joshua killing on the way. So technically they were there in the beginning, they just didn't own the whole place.
