Date: 2006-07-09 04:21 am (UTC)american parties liberal?? bullshit
Date: 2006-07-10 04:38 pm (UTC)Both mainstream parties are socially conservative and right-wing of most democratic governments, only Iran and Israel come close to the xenophobia, bigoty and religious fervour of Democrat and Republican parties in the USA.
Re: american parties liberal?? bullshit
Date: 2006-07-10 06:28 pm (UTC)The only thing that is close to classically liberal are the tax breaks for the rich and the cuts to welfare and education.
when it comes to political parties, the UK has 3 main parties:
* Labour was traditionally left but now cherry picks policies from left and right of centre, and currently leaning right.
* Conservatives were traditionally right, but are currently claiming to move to the centre and occasionally cherry picking policies from the left.
* Liberal Democrats - traditionally centre, but currently effectively left of the other two parties, and moving economically right and socially left.
If you compare the worst european countries to the civilised bit of the US, like New York then you could come out ahead, but if you compare the main EU nations to the whole of the US including the redneck flyover states, america comes off a lot worse.

Date: 2006-07-10 03:11 am (UTC)At least most of them. Depends on who you talk too, I know this maybe an anecdote, but I'm finding it harder to locate actual "neo-cons" where ever I go. As opposed to just plain conservatives and reaganite republicans. REGARDLESS I DID NOT SEE WHAT HIS POINT HAD TO DO WITH MY POST AS I WAS ONLY JOKING AROUND AND HE HAD TO GAY IT UP WITH BEING SERIOUS ABOUT SOMETHING.

Date: 2006-07-10 04:28 am (UTC)It is hard to find more "neocons" around now because the term is pretty specific. Not just world view specific, but time frame specific. Neocons were liberals that changed the focus of their ideology. They didnt change their ideology.
Neocons started as basically communists/socialists. The ideology was Communism is fundamentally good and should spread throughout the world. Communism, of course, "failed them". It did so by its corruption. And they moved to a different target, democracy. They say "Democracy is fundamentally good and should spread throughout the world".
The reason we dont see new neocons is twofold. The first is that the ideology "Communism is fundamentally good and should spread throughout the world" is very very dead. The founding idea that we can make it all better if we just try is falling to a more complex understanding of politics.
The second is that the current neocons have fallen into the same traps that the communists did. In believing they were right and good, they have justified things that are wrong in order to achieve their goal. In doing these things, they have corrupted their ideals and themselves. Now, they arent anywhere as bad as the communists in the U.S.S.R. and other places were, and they probably wont ever be. The pits are the same, the neocons just havent started digging.
