Wearing the flag isn't desecrating the flag. It's the thought behind the action that counts here. When people burn the flag, they are effectively raising the middle finger to America, which is quite offensive. When an athelete who just won a gold medal at the olympics drapes himself in the flag, it's meant to show patriotism.

There are established ruls of ettiquette when it comes to dealing with the flag, and wearing it as clothing - even a cape - IS a taboo.

You're not supposed to let it or an image of it get wet in the rain or be out at night either, and you're not supposed to put it on anything disposable, like those tacky little car flags or toothpicks.

A better show of patriotism from folks would be to support their country without being jackasses toward other countries, pay their taxes without bitching, and vote from educated viewpoints.

There is an established set of Flag Rules (http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html) that dictate what is and is not respectful actions toward the flag of the united states. Wearing the flag is a DISRESPECTFUL act and completely against section 8d of the Flag Rules. These are not just rules, they are supplemented laws that are underscored by Presidential proclamations and executive orders.

In essence, you are so wrong it's not even funny.

Note also that burning the flag is the respectful way to dispose of it when it's no longer fit for display - for instance, if it's been worn, touched the ground, or tattered by wind (perhaps it was hung from someone's car antenna for too long?).

Are you kidding me? Flag etiquette specifically says wearing the flag for any reason is taboo.

That sounds like you're advocating prosecuting people for their political thoughts.

lol when I worked at a copy place I had to print out this letter that some kid was going to send to the president. It said the American flag should be changed because it is racist, because it does not include all the flags of the world. WTF? who taught that kid what racism ment? If that was true then wouldn't that make all flags "racist"? I was like WHAT THE HELL ARE KIDS LEARNING THESE DAYS??

I don't know what new-fangled thing they're learning on today. In my day kids learned:

up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, select, start.

I thought about this as I was getting off the commuter rail tonight. A plastic American flag lay on the ground.
