What's it like living without shame?

No shame?

I'd imagine it feels like you can lie your way into a war that has so far claimed 2464 American soldiers lives solely so you and your cronies can profit from it.

I'd imagine it feels like you can get blackbox voting machines throughout the country with no papertrail so you can nudge two different elections in your favor.

I'd imagine no shame feels like you can add signing statements to all laws you sign so that you can pre-interpret them for your own benefit, instead of letting the judicial branch do its job - after all, the goal is a unitary executive. Hail, King George.

I could go on, but a full accounting would leave my fingers bloody.

But then YOU clearly know some modicum of this feeling of 'having no shame', or you would not have responded as you have.

The shame is in making Memorial Day a political issue.

Eh. Do you have any idea how many soldiers die during peacetime?

From: [identity profile] kmilligan.livejournal.com
It's not zero. Many soldiers have given their lives during peacetime on training exercises.

Less than the number of people murdered in the inner cities. Out of curiosity, does anyone have the homicide reports for the past 3 years for the United States, or even for just California?

...Or how many British soldiers were killed by 'freindly fire'? (I.E. US target practice)

Eh, plenty of Americans have been killed by our own forces. Mostly because the Air Force doesn't like grunts, no matter what country they're from.

A physics professor I know swears we must have been a different species back in WW2. I mean, we lost 2000+ on Pearl Harbor. Hell, the number of soldiers lost in Iraq hasn't even surpassed the number lost on 9/11.

WW2 != Iraq. Not even same ballpark.

World War II killed many many more people. But you're forgetting one of the lessons of World War II, which is that when we don't deal with problems when they are little, they end up knocking on our door once they have become big. World War II cost the lives of nearly 300,000 Americans. What if the Allies had sided with Czechoslovakia instead of seeking "peace in our time"?

Eh. Iraq is just a battefield is a global war. Call it the Battle of The Bulge.

Half-agreed. The emphasis on how many people have died is missing the point, one way or the other. If Iraq is worth fighting over, the number of casualties is relatively minor by historical standards. If we should never have gone at all, one is too many.

From: [identity profile] tbonestg.livejournal.com
Eh. You're forgetting all the soldiers in Iraq who would have died anyway in training accidents. So the margin isn't actually one soldier, but a baseline of a thousand or so military personnel each year.

In Iraq we started this occupation. Nothing like WW1, WW2, Korea. In Vietnam we lied about being attacked (Gulf of Tonkin) to jack up going to war. We assassinated the South Vietnamese's Premier so we could get "our man " in place. We end up losing 58 thousand men for nothing and tearing the country apart.

Iraq Nam
