I like the spirit of the idea, I really do. I'm just not sure I want our newest and largest pool of military recruits to be people who got here 5 minutes ago. And you know, regardless of intentions, that immigrants will get the shitty, dangerous assignments.

Already done. Permanent residents serve in the US Armed Forces. Being in for three years even gets your naturalization waiting period waived (http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/services/natz/special.htm#lpr).
Getting a green card is a complex process in and of itself--it's certainly not the same thing as having a person who's not been in the country before drafted into the military.
