The recipe is top secret.
Just one of the many "compelling" signs carried by Mexican nationals illegally working in the US during the Illegal Aliens protest.

Many people at my school were complaining that the burrito places nearby were closed on Monday, and that was the big issue. Oh, college students.

While amusing, he's reinforcing the stereotype that everyone of Mexican heritage here in the US is neither a citizen nor even here legally.

Besides the fact that it's pretty typical fast food, nothing. And about as authentic as a $7 bill.

Not many, but the authenticism I was talking about was "authentic Mexican food."

But then again, when I get a jones for Taco Bell, that's exactly what I want. When I want real Mexican food I go to an authentic Mexican restaurant, such as this particular local place in Cincinnati called Xochimilco. It's yummy.

You have to be an illegal immigrant to know how to make burritos? Do they wipe your memory or something when you become a legal U.S. citizen?

Date: 2006-05-03 06:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jsingood.livejournal.com
No, once you become a citizen, you have to start calling them "wraps" and begin to stick things like cajun shrimp or thai chicken in them.

It's a good point if you think about it. People hated the Irish when they first started coming... now we drink Irish beer and have St. Patrick's Day. It's a blending of cultures. We eat Mexican food, drink Corona, and celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but we want to keep those "dirty Mexicans" out of our country. Why?

And if you say because they don't pay taxes, I will say this: I promise you that they wouldn't be required to pay any taxes for making $2/hr anyway.

Date: 2006-05-06 08:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] psych0squirrel.livejournal.com
I don't think anyone is willing to work for $2/hr under non-coerced circumstances, as far as i know that's just american teens and 20-somethings who wait tables and don't report all their income. A lot of places in the US wouldn't have any labor if that was the going rate of employment: they're immigrants not stupid, they can figure out where they are going to be payed more. There is of course the problem with inforcing contracts. I also thought it was pretty funny when we started getting news that the chineese "cheap labor" started getting footloose and voting with their feet too, I bet that just pissed off the businessmen! (The Chinese gov't too! What individuality... separate loci of authority, attempts at unionization: blasphemy!?)

I mean seriously though, not all places are as inequal as california. The reason they are able to live the good life there with imported domestic help is that there are richer people and poorer people. It's a function of income inequality, that's why the immigrants have started to get savvier about where they land and look for work these days, as there was too much of a dichonomy in the southwest.

Illegal immigrants who come here from Central America are willing to work for $2/hr because they were making less than that per DAY in their home country. And this is one of the main problems with illegal immigration: employers will hire them and pay them nothing because they are illegal and don't have a choice - they can't stand up for their rights as an American if they're not supposed to be here in the first place. It's not stupid of the illegal immigrants at all - they risk their lives to get here, and they work for nothing to support their families back home.

You make it sound as if illegal immigrants come here just to come here. That's just not true - they come here because they can't afford to feed their families. Many die in their dangerous journey across the border, but they are willing to take that risk in order to make the $2/hr that will support and feed their families. It's either that or starve to death.

And I love the oh-so-common question, "why don't they just come here legally like everyone else?" If only people realized how difficult it is for Central Americans to legally come here. A very high percentage of people there are denied visas just to visit the US, much less come here to work, especially if they are poor and need a job. The US doesn't want to allow more poor Mexicans in because there are already "too many" - we only want the smart, richer ones so that they can "contribute to our society."

Those immigrants are only trying to feed their families so that they won't starve to death, and people make them out to be horrible criminals because they risk their lives to get across our border in order to do that and don't pay taxes on the $2/hr that they are making (when they wouldn't have to pay taxes on that anyway).

OK. I'll elaborate. Mexicans and other South American immigrants have been moving around, partially to get away from the monopoly and overcrowding of the cheap labor market in the southwest. It's a big country. Some of them do not work for $2/hr, it depends on the labor market. No one would come to where their work was demanded if that was the only reward, but they do move around. Many of the Mexicans have been here since their currency crisis in the mid-1990's, and a lot of them have been getting their kids through public schools. As there is a baby boom about to graduate, in Virginia at least some of our legislators have been trying to find a way to continue to exclude out of state students from local funding as we'd have a rush on our universities, but allow resident aliens who had been to our own public schools for 5 yrs or more, to to apply for in-state tuition with the understanding they would begin residency proceedings.

So certainly, some people fit the absolute poverty types, and some people will always fall through the cracks but you can't really generalize to say that it is all illegal aliens these days. It is more important not so much that your people are illegal so much as they are NEW and don't know the ropes yet and are in situations where they can't necessarily escape as easily, that has less to do with all illegal immigrants and more to do with the sketchy people they are dealing with now, it is possible it has gotten harder to get across over the years, I don't know. Recently immigrants have been getting mixed in with the corporations which are all about standardization and no health care, and the service sector moreso then only rich californians. The reason california has so much people doing crap jobs is because it's a pretty inequal place, I found the grocery stores to be cheaper there as well as just more poor people in general.

Besides, stop being so reactionary, most people don't even think they are horrible criminals. There is a big push in the more exasperated circles to just standardize the whole bloody process. In this I think Bush is onto something, the guest worker program would basically allow us to have the same bloody trade agreements with more safety nets, to insure that people were able to report crimes, something I'm sure the domestic police would love as well. This would also make the security hawks less twitchy by keeping better track of who crossed the border now that we've admitted that they are useful to the economy and want to be here. I mean does it matter why they want to come? They are obviously coming anyway and we are obviously letting them in and ignoring their pressence- so lets check ID's at the door and issue some sort of resident drivers license. Having some non-profits available to teach english probably wouldn't hurt either, many of them want to integrate: they get paid better!
