I thought it was always owned and run by Russians. I'd always assumed that's why there were so many Russian sock puppets on here.

Yep, it's been owned by Russian companies and/or eaten by other Russian companies for a decade or so now, but until very recently all staff was in California I think, and with the servers here, under US law. There are lots and lots of Russian users from the early days, so that was almost certainly the impetus for Russian capital involvement. This server move is new, though, along with yesterday's unannounced TOS changes. Lots of close knit groups are trying to fly under the Russian government radar here, so that may be connected to this. ¯\(°_o)/¯

Well all anti-government russian citizens on LJ have left long time ago or have been arrested (if they live outside of main metropolitain areas). So I believe latests move are aimed against the huge ukraininan community here.

They've been arresting people in russia for political posts and re-posts for the last decade or so. Mostly people who live outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg. I remember one girl got arrested for posting a historical WW2 picture of German soldiers standing in front of the house in which she lives now - spreading of nazi propoganda. Though she did that on VK (russian version of FB). But i've known and actually followed some LJs here that got in trouble with the law too.

How can we move the whole community to Dreamwidth?

There is a hinterland of occasional contributors and commenters. We would need to find a way to inform them of the ways to all shift over too.

The comms were the only things that really mattered on LJ after blogging became last years' thing almost a decade ago. This community remains one of two to which I still contribute.
