Not sure how this cartoon is supposed to work. Is the joke that she doesn't know what the software is???

Honestly, disk wipers are dime a dozen. There's tons of them, they're all just about equally (ie, 100%) effective, and they're a bog-standard perfectly-reasonable tool that *everyone* with half a clue uses before disposing of unwanted-but-working disks.

(Unwanted-but-not-working disks, you shred, or pound into scrap with a hammer. Professionally-paranoid people do that to working disks after wiping them, but that's not a normal step for a disk that's going to be re-used for something else by someone else.)

In Apple Land you choose "secure erase" from the built in disk utility, and your disk is wiped according to the DoD 5220.22-M specification.

If she hadn't of used it people would accuse her of poor security.

That is not proper protocol to do that at all in government.

No. The DoD standards were totally made outside of the government. *eyeroll*

I dunno man. Scrubbing hard disk seems like it could be SOP.

Do you do IT for state department?

No he doesn't, and he's not a congressman from Alabama, either.

And OF COURSE you scrub disks that you're not using any more. You'd have to be an idiot to think that's a problem - like, say, the kind of idiot who's going to create a fake livejournal account claiming to be an Alabama congressman so he can post TWOOF ABOUT BENGHAZI!!!1! cartoons to a small lj-community. You'd have to be *that* stupid, and that's really fucking stupid.
