Democratic Republics are a little like clothes shopping. You go to a store, and you get two choices. One may be a little large, but okay, the other you can't close the snap on. Settling for the baggy one isn't "settling for the lesser evil", it's making the best of what options you have.

Liberals do hate the Iraq War, but have respect for someone able to admit that they were wrong about voting for it (and who has done a pretty good job elucidating their reasons, especially in that climate when so many of us fell victim to the same narratives.)
