I usually dislike your cartoons, but this one made me chuckle. I think you could have done some more with the 3rd panel, though (ie-- have him do some "calculations" or something).

i hate this. fuck partisanship in this crisis. of course the left is going to blame bush for it. what is this country coming to when winning political favor becomes more important than saving the lives of our citizens?

i concur. but on a side note i don't believe "our citizens" includes latuff.

ok fair enough. but he is definitly not the only one. i have been losing a lot of respect for people i previously looked up to as they condemn bush for the disaster.

Because the federal government had nothing to do with the handling of the disaster? And the Bush admin hasnt had a hand in the FEMA changes that have let this travesty of a response occur?

How do you figure people think it's more important? If some people make political statements, does it keep water from being delivered? Do the relief workers stop? I don't see a connection between talking politics and saving lives, but feel free to show me the light.

Yes.

When politicians get attacked by the media they most often immediately drop whatever they are doing and go into CYA mode. This became evident when a helicopter got shot at and the entire evacuation effort came to a screaming halt. Instead of counter attacking and immediately securing the surrounding area they instead sat on their hands until someone higher up could take over and therefore assume the blame for any further negative incidences.

How is "When politicians get attacked by the media they most often immediately drop whatever they are doing and go into CYA mode" evidenced by a helicopter being shot at? No one criticised the helicopter, and no one's shooting at Bush. Bush isn't directly helping people evacuate anyway, so even if Latuff's cartoon worried him to distraction and he just stopped working to wring his hands, people would still be evacuated at the same pace.

Because the local officials who were quasi running things ordered the Superdome evacuation to stop so they wouldn't get blamed if one ended up getting shot down.

Believe it or not, Bush doesn't micro manage every little detail of every thing that happens in this nation.

That's basically what I said. I only mentioned him because he's the one being attacked in the cartoon, which is what the initial poster was talking about. You're basically making my point for me.

Again, there's a difference between an actually dangerous situation, like gunfire for instance, and harsh words.

ok heres the problem.

the meaningless stubborn partisanship that exists in america is ridiculous. people will argue along party lines for any reason. actually, more accuratly, people will argue AGAINST the opposing party regardless of the issue.

i am probably more liberal than 80-90% of the country, but i dont see a reason to attack bush. stuff arrived late, but its not like its terribly easy to organize and prepare the massive amounts of relief material and personel. also, bush has relatively little to do with the efforts, as well as the administration. here is a list of people who deserve blame:

1. God, for causing the hurricane
2. the local ranking officers of the armed forces for not keeping an effective peace
3. those who could have gotten out of new orleans but didnt

besides them, any other responsibility is indirect. bush cancelled his holiday (oh boy, now he can do his job!), congress called an emergency session, etc... its not as if washington has turned a blind eye, its that this was totally unexpected.

my point is, all of the bush-bashing is opportunistic. if the left ever wants to gain any credibility, we need to stop trying to undermine bush at every turn. his approval ratings are low enough, now lets try something productive.

Okay, fair enough. He does enough to undermine himself, anyway.

Even the Dallas Morning-Star and the Washington Post are bashing Bush for the way he's handled this. I was actually impressed by the fact that this isn't partisan.

any capitalist politician would have done the same - I agree

Castro faced a level 5 hurricane last year. 1.5 million people were evacuated to higher ground. 20,000 houses were destroyed. But not a single life was lost. Not one.

Castro is not a socialist, but a doctator who uses socialist rhetoric. He is a Bonapartist strongman, but their system is set up to regard people more than the market.

The US is turning away help...

...from 50 countries, including Cuba, which has offered 1,100 doctors and 26 tons of medicine.

Bush cut the natural emergency funding 44% when a hurricane liek Katrina was predicted as the top 3

i dissaprove of the governments handling of the hurricane, but not so much bush's.

he takes too much credit when things go well and takes too much blame when things go bad.

as for the funding, i dont really know enough about how it would be spent to reply in a well thought out manner, but i find it hard to believe they could have prevented all of what happened.

exactly what happened is what was predicted. The levees could have been rebuilt/bolstered, exactly as it was recommended they should have been.

And FEMA is intentionally refusing aid (water/gasoline/food) being offered to survivors in order to "force" people to leave NO. As if people there have the means to do so.

What is funny, is that there IS oil in new Orleans, lots of it, it is our main oil port and refinery city.
