I don't think anyone is forecasting our extinction. And the thing is, the worst polluters will probably be fine, because they are rich enough to meet the crisis as far as their personal lives are concerned. It is the innocent and poor masses, such as we, that will suffer terribly.

Well, I think you may be a little darkly exuberant in that. I don't think any of the scientists arguing about the dangers of climate change are going that far. On the other hand, in the face of the pressures that climate change may bring on societies, governments may overreact and bring about great wars, which do make extinction possible.
