The Middle East Friendship Chart (http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_world_/2014/07/17/the_middle_east_friendship_chart.html). They added ISIS. Nobody likes them. They don't even have an "it's complicated" relationship with anybody. They get invited to no fancy dress parties.
I think it helps to think of all of this is as a continuation of the Great Game between the English and the Russians over influence in Asia. Strategies shift, but power on the map is a major objective.
