I remember believing all sorts of ridiculous things, back when I held to roughly "spiritual" beliefs about the nature of the universe. Looking back, I feel that growing to acknowledge their lack of any foundation in reality was an important part of my "maturation," such as it is.

As such, I am astonished less by the silliness of what many adult believers believe than its sheer childishness, the ways in which their beliefs resemble the sort of idle speculations I would entertain as a young adolescent. Who would think, much less articulate, of their anatomy as being of any particular concern to the greatest, most powerful being they can possibly imagine? Does he assign particular significance to some mole on his back, as well?
