Shuttle Damaged by Excessive Photons

SPACE CENTER, Houston - The space shuttle Discovery, under more scrutiny for defects than any previous shuttle, has been determined to have sustained significant damage from photons bombarding it from thousands of observation cameras. As the research begins into exactly what went wrong, scientists are puzzling over how to get the damaged vehicle safely back to earth.
"Although there is little precedent for photons damaging physical objects, it appears that the concentration of billions of photons from surveillance and news cameras is the cause of this superficial damage," noted one senior engineer. The damage assessment so far includes damage to several insulation panels and to the same fuel gage which originally postponed the Discovery launch. Additionally, the passenger side rear view mirror has been knocked off.
This sort of seemingly minor damage can complicate re-entry for the shuttle, due to the extreme temperatures experienced as well as the difficulty merging. Scientists believe a repair mission by the astronauts to the outside of the shuttle is the best chance for eliminating any chance of problems.
"I'm sure a repair mission will take care of this," noted one NASA official. "We just have to get someone to sign off on the overtime."
As an added precaution, NASA is taking the unusual step of turning off the offending surveillance cameras for the return flight, and is asking the news media and people with digital cameras to also refrain from photon bombardment.
