We have world class healthcare for everyone with no cost at point of access. Sure, there's problems, but there seems to be less problems than in the for profit system in the US. Sure, the care isn't as good as the best care in the US, but if you want that you can buy insurance that costs a fraction of what it does in the US.
Did you live in a poor socialist state, or a rich one, because I've lived in three rich socialist states (Australia, Germany and Denmark) and been hospitalised in all three and the care was great.
I believe that comparing a poor socialist country to a rich capitalist country is a false equivalency. I've noticed it's common amongst those who got out of the former Soviet bloc countries to believe they were the only socialist countries that ever happened, but pretty much all of western europe is at the very least mixed, and would have been considered up until recent times to be actually socialist. I know until the 80s in Australia if you asked someone what our economy was they would say "socialist".
