This cartoon prys on the worst of human emotions - fear, revenge, anger - and uses it to contort an issue.
The fact remains that there are men detained in Gitmo that may not have anything to do with 9/11, Iraqi car bombs, Madrid, London, beheadings, or any other sensational image that could be put in a cartoon. These men do not deserve the treatment that TIME and other periodicals and documents have been reporting. Furthermore, if we truly are the land of the free, home of the brave, what does it say about our government if we are willing to resort to such inhuman treatment? It is contradictory to our ideals that "all men are created equal" and the prohibition of "cruel and unusual punishment."
I'm sure your going to call me unpatriotic or something, but whatever. this cartoon is bullshit.
Nothing to do with 9/11? Maybe not directly, however the people at Gitmo did in fact attempt to kill Americans in Afghanistan (mostly) and Iraq. A few have actually been released and re-captured in combat trying to kill Americans, what should that tell you about these people? It should tell you that they are where they belong. Which is in prison.
This cartoon isn't about prying at fears, it's about discernment. One could argue that almost any kind of punishment is cruel or unusual, but thats a subjective opinion.
I don't know if your unpatriotic or not, but it seems like you take a more vocal stance in favor of terrorists being treated nicely than you do on opposition/retribution to their murderous intent and actions.
Who's side are you on anyway? And don't say your on the side of humanity or human rights. Pick a side, terrorists or everyone else?
Treating people we detain inhumanly, denying peoples rights, and not speaking out about what our government is doing is unpatriotic.
We are the land of the free and the brave, and we should freely and bravly treat everyone well and according to the law, regardless of their actions or percieved actions.
Anything else is cowardly, tyranical, and in opposition to the foundations that this nation was founded upon.
So pick a side, are you a traitor to this nations ideals, or do you support treating our detainees well?
The fact remains that there are men detained in Gitmo that may not have anything to do with 9/11, Iraqi car bombs, Madrid, London, beheadings, or any other sensational image that could be put in a cartoon.
While the cartoon does play on the emotions you mentioned, your initial statement above is false. Many of the detainees were captured and secured due to actions spurred by 9-11. The beheadings occurred in response to military actions in a plea for public support and to apply a caustic/acidic pressure to the political foundations that support a policy of war. The bombing of London is still being bore out, but initial investigation is leading to evidence of an insurgent influence among the native civilian population of Europe.
There is enough cause and effect evident, the cartoonist is far from leaps in logic in his illustrated opinion. Was it the same group that flew the planes? No, their dead. Was it the prisoners in Gitmo? Doubtful, shackles make it hard to get on the tube during the morning rush. Is there evidence of a movement among the fringe Islamists(?)that would be happy to take credit for all of the above actions? I don't think that's deniable. (You are free to prove me wrong, of course.)
The point is, the detainees are using our very liberal sense of human rights to complain and make politicians scramble. All prisoners do this, it's nothing new. Their treatment is kind compared to the actions of their comrades.
And I'm not saying they don't have rights. I'm not taking a stance there. I'm saying the cartoonist has a point.
If you'd told most people on 9/12 that in 2005, the media would spend a month tearing itself apart over whether or not a US soldier flushed a Quran down a toilet, they'd have looked at you like you were out of your mind.
Or in your case, a little more out of your mind than normal.
Human rights groups have historically done far more harm than good when democracies have to conduct counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations.
That is to say that there was more pain, misery and death because they were involved than if they hadn't.
The Trade Center victims, beheaded journalists, and London victims should have appealed to Amnesty International to make it illegal for them to be murdered by terrorist organizations! Then, the terrorists would have stopped! please, read that line again. Do you realize Amnesty International has NO CONTROL over making it "illegal to be murdered by terrorist organizations"? Better yet, isn't it illegal anyway? Well, yes, it seems murder is illegal! Amazing. Thank you, Amnesty International. You do your job oh so quickly.
I beleive in the fundemental rights of all citizens of the United States, They aren't citizens of the US, and they aren't recognized by any international treaties we recognize, so fuck 'em.. Honestly, why is it that we care so much about these terrorists?

Except for a Muslim terrorist group taking responsibility for it, for starters.
