Date: 2014-06-13 03:26 am (UTC)It is your point of view and I certainly support your right to hold it. But when we're talking about undocumented residents, we're talking some 30 million people with families and lives in this country. Taking an ultra-hard line on them, making it impossible for them to continue here would create chaos leading to a very uncivil society. Turn those people into criminals and then you'll see what chaos really looks like.
There's no orderly way to expel all those people, return them to their country of origin. And there are industries in this country dependent on that labor - meat plants, agriculture, fruit, garment manufacture. Our economy would take a big hit besides the costs associated with tracking down and mass deporting.
There is institutional racism behind a lot of laws, and drugs and immigration are two historically established examples. I'm not saying everybody who wants to take a hard line on the topic is a racist but there's a lot of blanket judgments that get thrown around when it comes to illegal aliens.

The Pew Research you are referring to is up to 2010, when unemployment was very high. It's 2014 now and things probably are different now.
