Telling 30 million people with families and lives that they have to leave the country is what I would call barking up the wrong tree.

I've yet to see a realistic solution from conservatives, which is why all they can do is say no to immigration reforms offered up by anyone else.

Just because you don't consider deportation or sending them to the back of the line realistic does not mean it's not realistic. Unfortunately, we've created a policy crisis with no good answers, so it's about causing the least amount of harm to the fewest people. Maybe that means naturalizing only the children or those who were brought here as children as some sort of "sins of the father exception," maybe it means more immigration period, I don't know. This isn't an easy one, but assuming those against one specific plan are racist and/or xenophobic is a good way to ensure they're unlikely to see engagement on the issue as worthwhile.

Are you suggesting the only reason conservatives aren't working towards any actual solutions is because liberals are saying mean things to them? Refusing to engage and allowing the problems to continue is likely why people on the left get frustrated. With Mexican immigration at a net zero, this is the time to address it.

Deporting 30 million people is not realistic. The cost, the logistics, the economic damage to American businesses, pushing it would effectively destroy the GOP. Only in lily-white gerrymandered districts is that sort of stance viable. Nationally, it would be death.

That's a really bizarre takeaway from my comment, never mind a continued misstatement of the conservative position on the matter (a "conservative position," I might add, that doesn't appear to exist in any sort of consensus way). A key problem as to why Republicans cannot come to a conclusion on it is because there's a decided split on the matter, and much of the issue in this current term is because of concern that not getting it done now means not getting it done anytime soon with the incoming class of Republicans in the midterms.

Maybe people on the left should stop getting frustrated and start offering solutions that might bring some people from the other side on board? Any glib nonsense you throw unthinkingly at Republicans and conservatives I could easily say about the other side on this specific issue, and I know that the left is not some unified front on how to deal with the immigration issue, either.

Of course it's realistic. It's entirely realistic and doable, and is something that may harm the GOP with moderates who are already angry that the right wing party is actually representing the right wing, but beyond that, there are budgetary benefits, employment benefits, economic benefits to exploring it. I'm not for a blanket deportation because I think, at this stage of the game, it's a really unproductive and arguably unfair way to deal with it, but in a world where we turn away people for simply being from the wrong country or because we hit the quota of doing it the "right way," I'm not sure what message blanket "amnesty" does, either.

This is only slightly less bad than the POV of some southern State Senator, who wanted to deport all Iranian immigrants, as well as their American born, Iranian-American offspring.

When I read that news article months ago, my head exploded. Repeatedly.

Cause nothing says America, like deporting American citizens to a country they've never been to, jus cause their parents came from there. Yup!

Heaven forbid this should ever happen, but if BDJ was ruler of America (for a day) and someone said to you:

Before we move on to any other pressing issue, you must take a stand on what we should do about immigration. Well, BDJ, what do we do?

And don't cop-out. Just answer with your personal POV--even if it's a tough decision and you feel the other sides of other arguments, be decisive, and take a fucking stand. What would you do?

I don't know if I could deport anyone. I think the fairest option I've seen (and I'm not convinced it's the best option out there) is that we continue as we were and those who have chosen to come here illegally move to the back of the proverbial line.
