Interesting that in the recent bruhaha about Jesus' silence on economic theory and the state (aside from issue the lack of evidence was interpreted as "evidence") a certain atheist seems very misinformed that the the Hebrew scriptures (particularly the prophets like Hosiah) seemed to have a lot to say about those subjects (well regarding the relationship of the state and the poor). After all, Liberation theology as developed by Gustavo Gutiérrez (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberation_theology)wasn't made out of thin air. :-)

Ratzinger was intelligent to see the attack on the hierarchy of The Church that was liberation theology. After all, the pope's own artifice is oppressive.
