Haven't Americans, perhaps particularly middle-class white Americans, been going down this path for some time, along with those in Europe, who aren't even having replacement-rate children?
Oh. I guess I missed hearing that part of it. I was not giving it my full attention. You are correct, that not paying attention to your children does make you a neglectful all asshole.
I generally try to avoid extremists of all points of view. Not just child free, fundamentalist weather religious or political, or anybody who's going to demonize you because you don't agree with them. That means I try to avoid all assholes of all stripes.
And if you do not agree with me, yer gonna burn in HELL!!!! (please note the sarcasm)
It's a phase for many people, probably due to factors in their environments.
The toddler across the courtyard from me that has no verbal skills and communicates solely by crying and howling would be an example of the sort of thing that used to trigger me. Now I just pity his parents.
When I used to go to church, there was one set of parents that I have total respect for. They deliberately set out to adopt one of the most broken babies they could find. They found an autistic crack baby.
I know I would have a hard enough time with an autistic child alone, but one further damaged by the mothers use of crack and coming out the womb as an addict would make it just that much harder.
I know I would not be able to do it, especially as they already had 2 or 3 kids to begin with. THOSE people, I will listen to.

Date: 2014-02-07 02:10 pm (UTC)I used to ask people if they were crack babies until I met one. It became universally less funny once you meet one.
Just like my best friend growing up had a moderately autistic brother. I do not make fun of people with autism.
Pretty much everyone else is fair game, though. :D
