Sure, telling me I'm sexy *is* a compliment and I'm happy to get compliments, but only if they aren't backed by an implied threat. Then its not a compliment, its a warning.

the ridiculous argument Teh Menz whine about - "But I like giving compliments!" - could be solved if someone could figure out how to make assholes not act scary if their "compliment" isn't appreciated. Why don't men police themselves better?

That happened to me too, twas in college. But it was about 10-20 degrees out (farenheight, not Celsius) and this girl was wearing a mini skirt and tank top. I was bundled up as much as I could get. I was watching her to make sure she didn't freeze to death.


Luckily, no cars were in front of my bike. In hindsight tho....

I tell my fiancee she's very beautiful. Because she is. But dear Lord, I cannot imagine how anyone would think any of those other comments were even remotely acceptable! I mean, even the 'you're very beautiful' one is just awkward directed at anyone other than very close relationships.

Cat calling isn't done by men who want to get laid (by that particular woman anyway). It's done by men to intimidate and slut shame women who they know would never be interested in them.

It's not for getting laid, at least not directly. It's for making women feel unsettled and uncomfortable. Now, as with the pick-up artists' concept of "negging", the underlying idea is that if you make a woman feel unsettled, uncomfortable, and insecure enough, it will be easier to pressure her into sex. But no-one catcalling actually thinks that the response they're going to get is "Thanks! I'd really like to have sex with you because you yelled at me!"
