Yeah Obama was utterly wrong on that then too. I could pick quotes from Reagan that conservatives hate too, so what? If you think there's some rule that liberals can never be at odds with the person in the white house, I think you may be mistaking democrats for republicans.
The problem with Obama's, er, "evolution" on it was because it was so blatantly political. You can't even fault him for being wrong and coming around on it - when he was a state senator and needed to be on the far left on the issue (at the time), he was for it. When he needed to make a national name for himself, he was against it. When public polling shifted and he was in the minority on it, he was for it again.
It would be one thing if he was simply wrong. This is something else.
As you should, but you should be doubly annoyed that he was wrong for purely political reasons as opposed to some sort of misguided-but-justifiable belief.
No, because I'm not under some illusion that he's a perfect human being, he's just better than anything republicans have ever nominated. I know he's a politician. It says so on the package.
All true, but this isn't what bothers me. I expect politicians to act that way.
What bothers me is that people don't see it. Five years later, they're still worshipping Tom Tomorrow's "Idea of Obama" (http://www.zcommunications.org/the-idea-of-obama-by-tom-tomorrow-by-michael-mcgehee). The Obama administration has taught me that Democrats are every bit as gullible and stupid as Republicans.
he was as wrong as you are. Obama's lack of drive on that issue isn't any kind of secret. Liberals supported him in spite of it, rather than because of it.
Well, I think if progressive Americans had better options, they would chose them, as it is, everything else with a running chance was not only worse, but far worse.
Even today, very few people seem to know Obama's actual position. The blogosphere cheered his conveniently unverifiable statement that he personally supports gay marriage, but completely ignored the repeated emphasis of his belief that it's a states' rights issue. People even credit him for the Supreme Court's ruling on DOMA, when in fact he did everything in his power to prevent such a ruling from ever occurring. And then they tell us how he's so much better than Romney would have been...
He stands for the interests of those who elected him and those who fund his campaigns. That's it. His change on LGBT marriage is very simple; those who fund him no longer find such opposition to the prospect to be economically viable. Therefore...
