This was apparently tweeted by (semi-famous?) Scottish comedian Frankie Boyle. The person who posted it on FB thought he was just some dude and felt the need to redact his name.
Obama entered the White House with a promise to close Guantanamo and a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress... a majority that was filibuster-proof for about six months of his first term.
And Democrats in Congress joined with Republicans to block any attempt to transfer those prisoners to another facility. Obama could have mass-pardoned them but he had no other options.
Yes, it is. Especially since it was known way back during the Bush administration that the majority of the prisoners were innocent, held only because they possessed useful information. If Obama were a man of principle, he would have threatened to pardon them all... and then done it if Congress didn't blink.
So 6 months out of his first four years, pluss the time he's been in office now. He didn't do it in the first 6 months, but who's fighting to keep it open now that he wants it closed?
It was actually closer to four months. Al Franken was sworn in on July 7, but Ted Kennedy was absent due to illness and died a few weeks later. He was replaced by Paul Kirk on September 24 which then gave them a filibuster proof majority until Scott Brown took Kennedy's former seat. Your first sentence doesn't particularly matter since an attempt was made by Obama to get the issue moving in Congress. Nobody wanted scary Muslim "terrorists" in their backyard, though, so it failed. Politicians always promise us shit and rarely deliver, but this time it wasn't entirely on him. As per usual, Congress dropped the ball and shifted the blame to Obama.
The guy is Scottish. To people outside the US it Gitmo isn't a Republican/Democrat thing, it's an American thing. Torture, assassinations and spying on pretty much everyone as well, those are things that Americans do (other people do too, but that's not the point I'm making).
And so I don't sound too anti-American and jingoistic, the last few years have proven that our concentration camps across the Pacific weren't a right wing thing, but an Australian thing.
But regardless of the fact the guy is Scottish, if you're gonna comment and act "in the know" then you should know that our government isn't seen internally as one entity, but a waring bi-partisan state. It's unfortunate all the way around.
Look at the current situation, where we are force-feeding detainees who are being held on a hunger strike. I’m willing to cut the young lady who interrupted me some slack because it’s worth being passionate about. Is this who we are? Is that something our founders foresaw? Is that the America we want to leave our children?
We're all still waiting for him to ANSWER the damn questions he raised, with some actions and not meaningless words.
This is one area I am so dissapointed in him. I understand that dealing with the problem of Gitmo isn't easy, but he accepted a job that isn't easy. It's time for him to step up and do something about it.
Yep. He talks the talk like nobody else, but he's never walked the walk. The excuse during his first term was always that he was playing the long game and he would do everything he promised in his second term. Well, here we are...
