I'm afraid this time that Wendy is going to need a miracle. I take it that the Right has rounded up their own brigade of protesters. The culture war is heating up.
The number of protesters isn't going to be any real impact. The simple reality is that the Republicans have the votes and Davis can't filibuster for three weeks.
Expect the violence that does happen to be the work of "lone" types. Tiller's murder has all the hallmarks of a coordinated assault through just such a type. (I can find what I regard as a compelling link if need be, but it's an old one and will take some digging.)
After all, the abortion bill in play here keeps abortion legal through 20 weeks.
Which is in direct opposition to a Supreme Court ruling, thus making it unconstitutional. But since it isn't from a part of the Constitution that starts "A well regulated militia", it doesn't much matter.
Roe put the line at viability, which was defined at the time at 28 weeks. Viability has moved back to 24 weeks since then, and can be argued for even earlier than that, so there's one line. The other is that the discussion is starting to center around fetal pain, which is what the Arizona case winding through the courts are currently looking at.
This, of course, assumes Roe to be a decision with solid legal backing.
Yes, its a repressive area and Davis likely will experience backlash for her actions. Which is exactly what makes her all the more courageous in my eyes.
I never get why anyone who earns less than a million a year would vote republican. It's not like they have anything to gain from any republican policy.
Because they're being used. First they are threatened that their morality is under assault (which is nonsense, but hey), then the GOP comes riding to their rescue. The result:
While Christian conservatives with high incomes are more likely to vote for Republicans than their poorer counterparts, evangelicals "tip" to the Republican Party at a much lower income level than do other voters—about $50,000 lower, according to statistical analysis. Put another way, an evangelical voter with $50,000 in annual income is as likely to be a Republican as a nonevangelical voter with $100,000 in annual income. In a country where the typical household income is around $50,000, this is hug effect, and it means that Republicans attract far more support from lower-and middle-class voters than they would otherwise.
