How many times have you heard a conservative say liberals have nothing to offer but emotions for gun control debate? On last night's Daily Show, Jon Stewart tried to make sense of the NRA convention speakers' convoluted logic. Speakers like Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck said that President Obama and others are using tactics of emotion and fear... then went ahead using tactics of emotion and fear, prompting Stewart to do his Yoda impression. Ted Cruz bragged about his filibuster... then condemned a filibuster that blocked a bill he wanted to pass. Stewart concluded: "Stop pretending that background checks are the last barrier standing between a free America and Obama-sponsored government mom-rape." *

As I've said before, I don't understand the big deal about background checks, myself. I haven't bought a gun in years that didn't require a background check. In years. Hell, the first gun I ever purchased- an SKS in pre-Clinton gun ban days- was from a gun show and the seller didn't even let me pick the thing up until they had done a background check on me. I didn't actually pick the gun up until the next week. *shrug*

I was also surprised to learn that there are places that don't require a background check. I think it's about gun shows and different states though. The recent debates have made it much more confusing unless you are willing to wade through a lot of information at both the state and federal levels.

The debate isn't as simplistic as people make it out to be. I'd much rather debate first amendment issues. Much easier to understand.

Emotional arguments will always be the better part of popular politics, but it is still funny that the Party of creationism and ethnocentrism and Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin can imagine itself to be the voice of reason.

In my philosophy class I teach emotional arguments are fallacies and should not be used. In my english class I teach that they are persuasive devices and are core to good arguments...

We need more philosophers.

Man, I really hope law-abiding Americans are forcibly disarmed. It's what America deserves.

I will bet you that doesn't happen. There are 300,000,000 hand guns around. Guns and the Bible carved this nation out of the wilderness!

Could you please explain what you mean by "law-abiding"? Which laws count and which laws don't?
