Don't get me wrong, she led a tragic life and her death was sad. I'm just a music snob and I don't think her legacy is as important as most of the others on that list. But, like I said, I'm a music snob and that's just my opinion. Many people disagree with me on this, and I'm fine with that.
That's all right. I too consider myself to be a musical snob, and to be quite candid, I'm not very interested in her life's tragedy, but I think her work to be pretty important in the context of popular music of the 21st century.
I'm with you, I'm a music snob and I think Amy Winehouse is a) excellent and b) important. She's the biggest lounge act in 50 years, and relaunched the genre IMO. I think a lot of people only view her as "that trashy girl who did the rehab song". FTR I think "Rehab" is one of her worst.
I have heard both of her albums (I have a few friends that are into her music) and I still don't get it. I just don't see the appeal, nor do I see how what she was doing was that unique/influential. I guess only time will tell.
As for artists being pigeon-holed by one unfortunate single, that I can sympathize with. Just look at Shannon Hoon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQBVB0txIss) or Soul Asylum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FENjqlEnXTo) (not that Dave Pirner is dead, but still. . .)
