A lot of these businesses are getting money from the Department of Defense or the Department of Veterans Affairs. I am pretty sure conservatives don't consider those the government. Anything that has to do defense comes from America's independent freedom associations of freedom and independence.
It's being used against him because it's so blatantly ridiculous and, frankly, insulting. Everyone knows roads exist. His attempt to backtrack and act as if the context makes him sound better simply keeps it in the spotlight.
He shouldn't have opened his mouth like that period.
President Obama doesn't have to back track anything because he never said what Mittens Fillmore claims (http://factcheck.org/2012/07/you-didnt-build-that-uncut-and-unedited/).
And Politifact also agrees with me. (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/jul/26/mitt-romney/putting-mitt-romneys-attacks-you-didnt-build-truth/) As does the same gentleman from the Washington Post you cited earlier Wink wink (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/an-unoriginal-obama-quote-taken-out-of-context/2012/07/20/gJQAdG7hyW_blog.html)
Jeff's right though. Everything we have today could have been done better and sooner by bootstraps. Businesses acting in the quarterly interest of the shareholders always act with vision and development in mind.
well, private industry wouldn't have wasted so much time and money on things lke providing electricity to all citizens, paving roads in backwater counties and providing access to emergency personnel to all citizens equally. That's a lot of money that could have gone back into someone's pockets. Pfft.
"There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.
**The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.*** There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires."
If these intrepid business owners really did build it all by themselves, I'm sure they won't mind losing all their government contracts and all other forms of government support. Surely they can continue operating without those things since they're all self-sufficient. Of course we'll also have to tear up the roads that lead to their businesses and homes since those are government intrusions on their liberty. They can surely build those roads back up themselves.
Reg: But apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, viniculture, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh-water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
I'll take care to remember that all these businesses did it all by themselves when I choose to pay a little less and go to wal-mart instead :P No really, I worked for a very small internet based company that competed effectively with the big boys and the only reason we were (still are) successful is because of the client base and how we cater to them. I remember this every time I hit up a local business and get treated poorly (looking at you sexist gun shop, you suck!).

Midwest Tape also gets a great deal of its income by selling materials to public libraries. More taxpayer dollars! (Which, incidentally, are outsourcing the preparation of those materials from your local community as library budgets are cut.)
