Yeah, how dumb of someone to keep bringing up the fact that HE KILLED A WOMAN. I mean, we should've moved on from that a long time ago. After all, he has.
I think part of the relevance is not so much the fact that he was responsible for a death, but more the symbolism of Kennedy turning his back on a situation he shouldn't be turning his back on.
And if you wanna really point fingers when it comes to "killing" you need to recognize that so did Clinton, Reagan, Nixon, Kennedy, Carter, Ford, Johnson, Eisenhower, Truman and FDR.
My point is the role of the US President often requires some very tough decisions that may often result in the deaths of many people.
One of the clearest and most key motives from the begining was to remove Hussein from power and allow the Iraqis the power to become a self governing nation. So there is a clear motive for you! Enjoy it.
The Iraqis are well on their way to that goal now. The first step was removing Saddam from power, the next was the elections and there are other ongoing steps to this.
Yeah, that's the motive du jour. The original motive had to do with them dirty terrorists, in case you forgot...
then it was remove Saddam from power because he was a threat with all of his WMDs... but oh wait, they didn't exist... so now let's liberate the Iraqi people! How nice of us.
I hope things get better for Iraq. I hope that my realistic pessimism about the situation in Iraq is proven wrong. That would be great!
I suggest you go back and read the presidents address the night before we went into Iraq back in 2002. He does mention WMDs, but he also gives equal time to liberating the Iraqi people.
He gave Saddam a choice to leave the country. This was as much about WMD's as it was liberating the Iraqis and removing Saddam. Because one thing we've learned from history is that rogue nations run by dictators are a terrorists wet dream.
My point is, liberating the Iraqis was not an after thought justification, it was part of the job from the very begining of the war, and a noble one if you ask me.
I've heard many experts on this topic say that three things could happen: 1. Success 2. It will work for a while, but the government will get overthrown 3. Civil war - possibly the most likely.
Like I said, I hope you're right, but we aren't out of the woods yet. We are trying to transform an entire society and government to an opposite way of life after thousands of years of turmoil.
It's been my experience that the experts aka doomsayers are never spot on accurate. There were tons of experts saying Y2K was gonna wreak havoc, nothing happened.
Things are shaky in Iraq, but I think the elections are a big step in the right direction and as long as that momentum keeps, a coup or civil war is unlikely.
