Yeah, really. If anything it pisses me off that there's been such an expansion in government entitlements since Bush has taken office. He's a borrow and spend Republican.
Is that really any better, or maybe even worse, than a tax and spend liberal?
No, not exactly, but he is planning on taking money out of an already ailing system by allowing people to divert some of their contributions into private accounts, the result of which wil be to reduce the eventual benefits received by my generation by almost half, whereas if the social security system were left alone, it would start running a deficit in about 40 years, but that would only cause the benefits to be reduced by about a quarter.

And what would things be like 40 years after that?
I suppose that's one analogy. Another way of looking at it would be a train chugging along on a track which is about to come to an end. Do you try to build more track, get everyone off the train, or try following a track which leads off in another direction?
Hmmm. Interesting. My version of the train analogy would go something like this: You're chugging along on a track which will become only 75% stable in a few miles, a problem which could be solved by raising ticket prices slightly to pay for the repairs, so do you ask the passengers to contribute some more money, or do you try following another track which heads off in a different direction, even though none of the conductors can agree whether it's stable, unstable, or simply goes off a cliff?

I think it's worse.
