I haven't heard anybody suggest the death of conservatism. Far from it. Though if you think that winning two off year Governor elections, one in which the Dem didn't even show up and the other in which the Dem was bedeviled by negative media attacks and constant Republican Governor's Assoc. financed attack ads, is enough to forecast an impending Republican sweep in 2010 (of the type experienced in 1994) you're out of your mind.
How is it that Republicans like yourself put so much weight on the VA and NJ Governor's elections, where the issues were mostly local, and yet completely ignore the two House races which the Dems won including the NY one where the entire whacko right-wing leadership of the Republican Party put all their weight behind the Conservative Party candidate (to the point where they pushed out the official party candidate) and still lost. Shouldn't losing a seat that's been in Republican hands since the 19th Century be considered a huge loss for the likes of Sarah Palin when she practically lived in that district for the past few months?
I have heard right wingers talk a lot about liberals declaring the death of conservatism. Its like they talked a lot about liberals declaring Obama the messiah. It's not based on reality. It's just based on what conservatives think liberals think.
So your response is to cite the following things: The Editor of the New York Times Book Review who most people here haven't even heard of and who isn't a movement liberal. A lunatic who stars in one of the worst shows on TV and believes in numerous absurd conspiracies. A segment on a news program, with a question mark in the title, talking about that same editor who isn't a movement liberal (from what I read about him, he's actually a conservative).
I pointed out how you were wrong. Are you too closed minded to admit that I'm right?
You pointed to some dude who appears to be a conservative (the NY Review of Books guy) who seems concerned about the decline of conservatism, not celebratory. You then linked to a comic nobody's ever heard of. When I say "anybody" I don't mean some whacko who owns a hundred cats and screams at traffic signals. I'm talking about someone whose opinion actually matters.
It's funny because the two republicans elected governor are relative moderates, and the two conservatives running in the House both got spanked.
Deeds ran a terrible campaign and alienated the Obama Administration. Corzine is a tool. But, you know. If it encourages Sarah Palin to endorse more candidates, I'm freakin' ALL FOR IT, BABY!
I don't know if I'd call Christie a "moderate". He was one of the US Attorneys who didn't run afoul of Karl Rove and get fired (he launched several politically motivated investigations against Dems including one against Bob Menendez right before the election that mysteriously disappeared after said election). He also opposes Choice, would allow insurance companies to cut coverage for mammograms, would refuse stimulus money and would most likely opt out of the public option if given such an opportunity. He's no Governator.
I do get your point though. Deeds lost because he's a moron and ran from the Democratic Party, Corzine lost because of constant media attacks against him due to the NJ media's love affair with Christie. Neither can be blamed on Obama in the least.
I live in New Jersey, and never before have I heard of a man winning an election where his platform for winning is not having one. Christie has hardly stated any plans he has for the state.
Corzine on the other hand, despite his flaws, laid down what needed to be done. People didn't like that and booted him out.
I agree completely. I live in the state too and it seems to me Christie's entire campaign was saying he's not Corzine.
The people in the state unfortunately seemed to blame Corzine for everything that went wrong whether it was his fault or not. I don't see how Christie could make the claim that Corzine was responsible for the national economic crisis (caused by Bush) or the job loss tied to the Wall Street collapse (caused by Wall Street and Bush). I also can't understand why everyone seems to have expected Corzine to fix the decades of bad management committed by his predecessors in a matter of a few months.
bush winning by decision was a mandate, dems sweeping the board in 08 was mere luck, two republican governors are the beginning of the next american revolution
i don't identify as a democrat, i just find them occasionally convenient.
i do think the truth is too often ignored in favor of cute myths, but your predictable rush to say "the other guys do it too so that makes it okay" is telling of your underlying morality.
"i don't identify as a democrat, i just find them occasionally convenient."
I like how you put that.
I never said it was ok that parties use these tactics. Just the opposite, really. I despise both sides using stupid ass taglines and rhetoric in order to elicit emotional responses. I just found it funny that you seemed to imply it is one-sided.
People keep saying this, and yet it never happens.
The only reason why the Republican candidates lost was due to poor organization or inter-party warfare. If Conservatism dies, it will be due to suicide, not the Dems.
I love that what it takes to get conservatives happy is winning back the governorship of Virginia... a state that, just a decade ago, they'd have never thought they'd have to fight for.
And yet, the one race this past week which mattered most to conservatives-- NY-23-- was a total loss for them. Thanks to their antics, they helped turn over a district that'd been safe for the GOP since the Civil War over to a Democrat. So apparently the goal of the conservative tea party movement is... to increase the Democratic majority in Congress? Kudos.

That's pretty weak.

Honesty can get you nothing here in New Jersey.
