Tell me an LJ user didn't name himself after the most crashingly unreliable brand of hard drive on the market.

Well, I didn't want to sound like too much of a geek.

In all honesty the only time I ever had problems with a Maxtor drive was when I was told to attach a maxtor usb drive to a server in a poorly ventilated room. It literally melted. I took it out of the case afterward and the platters looked LPs that had been left in the backseat of a car on a sunny day.

Ha! Bizarre. Or freaky anyway.

I've had at least four take a dump on me, admittedly that's over a period of 15 years, but no other brand has been so consistently crappy to me. I even had a LaCie drive plugged into a Mac, with 300 GB of music on it, and it barfed up its liver, and sure enough I took the schmancy chromeplated case off and there it was, a Maxtor.

Well, I've been in the industry long enough to no longer classify magnetic media as long term storage. Back up early, back up often and backup your backups. Then again, I once miscounted the the number of zeros in cfdisk and rather than formatting a twenty gig partition to reinstall an OS I realized right after I hit enter I had reformated a 200 gig partition along with almost 40,000 mp3s.
